As the fall camp for the Wildcats gets underway, anticipation is high for a transformative season. With numerous positions up for grabs and a roster brimming with potential, the upcoming practices and scrimmages will be pivotal in shaping the team’s future. Key players are set to emerge, and the competition promises to be intense. Here are the standout individuals to keep an eye on as they vie for critical roles and seek to make their mark.
Adam Damante:
The Wildcats are poised for a competitive battle for the QB2 position. Damante joins from NAU, where he spent his freshman year. The Arizona native took snaps for the Lumberjacks during the 2023 season and has the potential to be a significant asset for the Wildcats. It will be intriguing to observe how Damante measures up against other quarterbacks such as Brayden Dorman and how smoothly he transitions into Arizona’s system.
Raymond Pulido:
Pulido makes his return to the Wildcats after entering the transfer portal following Jeff Fisch’s departure to Washington. Pulido made a strong impression as a true freshman starter and has exhibited NFL-caliber potential since his arrival in Tucson. Currently slated to replace Jordan Morgan, it will be fascinating to see how much further he has developed since the spring.
Kamuela Ka’aihue:
Ka’aihue emerged as a surprising standout during his true freshman year. Initially contributing on special teams, he soon began to make an impact on defense, recording 13 total tackles. With Jacob Manu holding down one linebacker spot, the second spot could become a competitive rotation among Justin Flowe, Taye Brown, and, of course, Kamuela Ka’aihue. The Wildcats possess considerable depth at the linebacker position this year, and Ka’aihue will be a key player to watch.
Genesis Smith:
The Hamilton High School graduate is emerging as a potential force at safety. Smith made waves last year by earning game reps and securing his first career interception. Observing how Smith performs against Gunner Maldonado and the other safeties at camp will be intriguing.
Defensive Line:
The defensive line is expected to be a focal point, as Arizona lost nearly its entire line to the transfer portal. Fortunately, the team has found solid replacements who are poised to maintain a formidable presence. Here are two players to watch:
Dominic Lolesio:
A redshirt freshman, Lolesio gained some experience in games last season. Standing at 6’4” and weighing 245 pounds, he is a formidable force on the edge and has demonstrated his ability to produce at the position.
Tristan Davis:
Davis possesses both the size and speed to be a disruptive force against quarterbacks and offensive lines. At 6’7”, he presents a challenging target for blockers. Although Davis has yet to see significant playing time, he could emerge as a standout during camp.
Cash Peterman / Jordan Forbes:
A duel for the starting punter position is shaping up between Arizona natives Cash Peterman and Jordan Forbes. This competition promises to be compelling to watch, whether during practice or scrimmage games, as both possess the capability to start.
Jeremiah Patterson:
Arizona boasts an exceptionally deep roster at wide receiver, yet Jeremiah Patterson, a recent JUCO transfer, is one player to watch. Having accrued over 1,000 receiving yards during his two years at CSM, Patterson could seamlessly integrate into Arizona’s offense.
Rex Haynes:
The son of Hall of Fame cornerback Mike Haynes, Rex Haynes has yet to make a significant impact on the field, aside from a notable performance in the 2024 spring game. Having missed his freshman year and been sidelined for the 2023 season due to injury, Haynes appears to be on the verge of a breakout. This fall camp could be the moment he solidifies his status as a rising star.
