This past offseason was full of wins and losses for the Arizona State Football Team. A big question mark heading into the 2024 season was who would be QB1 come game time against Wyoming.
Recap:
The Sun Devils lost three quarterbacks over the offseason: Jacob Conover (Utah State), Drew Pyne (Missouri), and top prospect/QB1 Jaden Rashada (Georgia). However, Arizona State was able to retain former Marana standout and past starter Trenton Bourguet. The Sun Devils also picked up two quarterbacks from the transfer portal, adding Jeff Sims and Sam Leavitt. Lastly, Gatorade and MaxPreps Arizona Player of the Year, Navi Bruzon, walked on to the team and immediately began turning heads, which is beginning to look like a steal for ASU.
The Decision:
Arizona State finally announced who would be starting under center on Monday. The call went to Sam Leavitt, the redshirt freshman transfer from Michigan State. As a true freshman, he saw the field four times for the Spartans, completing 15 of 23 passes with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Leavitt still has immense potential, as he was ranked the #1 player in Oregon and was a top-25 QB coming out of high school. Head Coach Kenny Dillingham told the media on Monday that Leavitt had only thrown 2 interceptions throughout the entirety of fall camp, which seems to have been one of the deciding factors in the decision. The Sun Devils are hoping to catch lightning in a bottle; with a young quarterback like this, there is certainly hope that he’ll be able to produce and only get better from here.
Quarterback Depth:

Head Coach Kenny Dillingham told the media on Monday that he believes the quarterback room is really good, and it’s clear to see why he would say that. With the addition of Jeff Sims, who is currently QB2, the Sun Devils have someone who can scramble well and add unpredictability to the offense, keeping defenses on their toes. Marana grad Trenton Bourguet is possibly sharing that QB2 spot with Sims, as Bourguet has proven he can be a solid player when needed. Bourguet has shown he can win games, including an electric performance where ASU upset Washington, who was ranked 8th in the country at the time. If these QBs can build solid chemistry with the top receivers, this team as a whole could shock many this year and be able to rebuild even more heading into the 2025 season.
