It isn’t common to say you play with a high school teammate at the division 1 level of college football, but for these three Desert Edge athletes, you can say you brought some company with you to Kansas. Deshawn Warner (Fr.), Aundre Gibson (Fr.), and Jonathan Kamara (Fr.) are all current athletes playing football for the Kansas Jayhawks in Lawrence, Kansas. The memorable story of this talented defensive trio starts back on Goodyear, Arizona where the three players contributed their skill sets playing for a successful Desert Edge Scorpions team. Desert Edge ended their 2023-2024 season falling 2 points short of a win over the number one seeded Higley Knights in the 2023 AIA 5A State Championship (Final score: 42-41).
Finishing Strong
In that 2023 Desert Edge run, these 3 defensive players put up stats that drew attention from many D1 schools resulting in multiple offers between the 3 athletes. Some notable teams taking notice includes: Oregon, Washington State, Nebraska, Arizona, and many more. Senior year, Deshawn Warner totaled 15 sacks and 63 total tackles ranking the 2nd best in the whole 5A division that year. Aundre Gibson totaled 30 tackles and 1 interception while Jonathan Kamara totaled 59 tackles and 4 sacks in their 2023 season. The 2023 Desert Edge program was nothing short of a highly talented 5A program that showed dominance throughout the whole season.
New Beginnings
Starting their collegiate careers at Kansas this season, through 8 games (currently), DJ Warner has 1 total tackle (against Illinois), Aundre Gibson has no stats posted yet, and Jonathan Kamara has no stats posted yet. This group of players will prove to be a great addition to the Jayhawks roster later down their careers as Kansas has a program to develop great athletes. Kansas currently stands with an overall record of 2-6 while being 1-4 in conference play, while just coming off a 2-point loss to the highly-talented Kansas State team.
