Arizona State bounced back from its Week 2 loss in dominant fashion, rolling past Texas State 34-15 on Saturday night in Tempe. The Sun Devils started slow, trading field goals in the first quarter to make it 3-3, but they found their rhythm in the second. Quarterback Sam Leavitt evaded pressure, rolled out, and fired a perfect strike to Jordyn Tyson, who hurdled a defender and tiptoed the sideline for a 30-yard touchdown that electrified the crowd and set the tone for the rest of the night.
By halftime, Arizona State had built a 20-3 lead behind Leavitt’s balanced playmaking. He finished the night 15 of 25 for 188 passing yards and two touchdowns while also adding 59 rushing yards and a 1-yard sneak for another score. Tyson led the receiving corps with six catches for 105 yards, consistently finding space against the Texas State secondary. The Sun Devils’ run game also shined, as Raleek Brown, starting in place of the injured Kyson Brown, torched the Bobcats for 144 rushing yards on 12 carries, including a 75-yard touchdown burst that effectively put the game out of reach.
Defensively, Arizona State controlled the tempo from start to finish. The front seven stifled Texas State’s rushing attack and forced the Bobcats into long third downs throughout the game. Even when Texas State managed a couple of late touchdowns, the outcome was never in doubt, as the Sun Devils’ defense dominated for most of the night.
The victory improved Arizona State’s record to 2-1, providing a much-needed rebound after the heartbreaking 24-20 loss at Mississippi State. Head coach Kenny Dillingham praised his team’s composure and energy, noting that this was the level of execution he had been waiting to see.
Next up, Arizona State hits the road to face Baylor in its first conference matchup of the season, while Texas State returns home to take on Nicholls.
