Arizona State secured a thrilling 27-24 road win over Baylor on Saturday night, opening Big 12 play with a dramatic walk-off. The game came down to the final seconds, when kicker Jesus Gomez calmly drilled a 43-yard field goal as time expired to give the Sun Devils the victory.
Gomez was perfect on his four attempts, converting from 31, 21, 33, and the decisive 43 yards. Quarterback Sam Leavitt completed 22 of 32 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown, and also scurried in for a rushing score to help his team.
Baylor had tied the game late in the fourth quarter when quarterback Sawyer Robertson hit Michael Trigg on a 33-yard touchdown pass with 1:52 remaining. In response, Arizona State engineered an 11-play, 49-yard drive, aided by a critical personal foul penalty, to move into field-goal range. On the very next snap, Gomez’s kick split the uprights and sent the Sun Devils’ sideline into celebration.
Baylor’s offense featured a strong night from Robertson (25 of 39 for 250 yards, three TDs, one INT) and a solid ground effort from Bryson Washington (17 carries for 111 yards). Despite logging 357 yards of total offense, Baylor was undone by three turnovers, two fumbles and an interception, which Arizona State turned into points.
On the other side, ASU accumulated roughly 400 total yards (221 passing, 179 rushing) and capitalized on the mistakes. The Sun Devils’ defense held firm in big moments and forced key stops as Baylor threatened.
With the win, Arizona State improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in Big 12 play, while Baylor dropped to 2-2 and 0-1 in conference. Next, ASU returns home to face TCU, and Baylor heads into a road matchup at Oklahoma State.
