Mike Woods is stepping away from Hamilton baseball after closing his career the only way that feels fitting: with another state championship.
The longtime Hamilton head coach is retiring after leading the Huskies to the program’s 10th state title, capping one of the most decorated coaching runs in Arizona high school baseball history. Woods started the Hamilton baseball program in the late 1990s and became the only varsity head coach the program had known through its rise into a state powerhouse.
Hamilton’s latest championship came in dramatic fashion, as the Huskies erased a 7-0 deficit to defeat Corona del Sol 10-7 in the 6A State Championship. The comeback not only gave Hamilton another title, but also gave Woods a final chapter that matched the standard he built in Chandler.
Under Woods, Hamilton became one of the defining baseball programs in the state. Before the 2026 title, the Huskies had already won nine big-school state championships in 2003, 2004, 2008, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022 and 2023, while also finishing as state runner-up three times.
The numbers behind his career speak for themselves. Under his coaching, Hamilton won 570+ games, 17 state semifinal appearances and 23 straight state tournament appearances. His program also helped produce five Major League players, 32 players who were drafted or played professionally, and 52 Division I players.
Woods’ impact was recognized beyond Arizona as well. He was inducted into the National High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2024 and had previously been inducted into the Chandler Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
For Hamilton, Woods’ retirement closes the book on an era that helped shape the identity of the school’s athletic program. He did not just win championships. He built the program from the ground up, turned it into a yearly contender, and created a standard that lasted across multiple decades.
The Huskies’ 10th state championship now becomes more than another trophy. It becomes the final stamp on a Hall of Fame career, and one last reminder of what Woods built at Hamilton.
