Two of Arizona’s most prolific and historic athletic schools faced off in this week one, Thursday night game to kick off the 6A conference for the 2026-27 season, as the Hamilton Huskies traveled into the heart of Phoenix to play the Brophy Prep Broncos. Highlighted by division one prospects on both teams and one of last year’s open division semi-finalists, this game was set to be a brawl from the start.

The air game wasn’t in form for the Huskies as three star quarterback Jaxson Sculley completed only a third of his passes, which was likely due to the absence of his wide receiver 1 Roye Oliver, a USC commit with more yards than most programs last year. Oliver chose to sit out the week one matchup citing an ongoing hamstring issue and an opportunity to rest one more week before the heart of the season. The Huskies easily made up for the lack of passing with a strong run game behind Devante Roebuck’s 55 yards and a touchdown, and amazing defense from the entire unit. The Hamilton defense ended the night with 4 interceptions, coming from different players, including a pick-six for Kacey Allen Jr.

The Broncos struggled to get the offense moving despite 160 yards from junior quarterback Noah Stewart, and a wide spread of receivers getting involved. The Huskies defense held UNLV commit Donovan Mcnabb Jr. to only 36 yards, and huge pressure in the backfield from stars like Derrick Leblanc Jr. including a fumble recovery reinforced the three score lead. Special Teams troubles also plagued the game for the Broncos as there were missed kicks, muffed snaps and kicks, and even a field goal returned for a touchdown as most of the Broncos trotted off the field early.

Big defensive plays and physical hits were the hallmark of this win for the Huskies, as players like Mitchell Raner, Billy Davis, JJ Diaz, and Kacey Allen all racked up over 7 tackles each demonstrating the power of this Hamilton defense. Looking on to the rest of the season, Hamilton looks determined to return to the open division and retake what they lost last year, while the Broncos try to tighten the ship and restore the order of Brophy excellence.
